Nikolai And The Others, a world-premiere play by Tony Award-winning playwright Richard Nelson, will debut Off-Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in spring 2013.
David Cromer (Tribes, Our Town, The House of Blue Leaves), who also staged the American premiere of Andrew Bovell's When the Rain Stops Falling for LCT in 2010, will helm the production that begins April 4, 2013.
Lincoln Center Theater commissioned Nikolai And The Others, which will officially open May 6, 2013.
According to LCT, "It’s 1948 and during a spring weekend in Westport, CT, a close-knit group of Russian emigres, including choreographer George Balanchine, composer Igor Stravinsky, conductor Serge Koussevitsky, painter/set designer Sergey Sudeikin and composer Nikolai Nabokov, gather to eat, drink and talk. In Nikolai And The Others playwright Richard Nelson reimagines, during the course of this weekend, the creation of Balanchine and Stravinsky’s historic collaboration, the ballet Orpheus, and explores the interesting and controversial ways American art was funded at the outset of the Cold War."
With the exception of one character, the remainder are all based on real people. Characters in the play include late choreographer George Balanchine, Nikolai Nabokov, Natasha Nabokov, Igor Stravinsky, Vera Stravinsky, Nicholas Magallanes, Maria Tallchief and Lucia Davidova.
Cast and creative team will be announced at a later date.
Nelson is the Tony Award-winning playwright/adaptor of James Joyce's The Dead. His works also include Two Shakespearean Actors, Farewell to the Theatre, Conversations in Tusculum, Sweet and Sad, That Hopey Changey Thing and Sorry, which will debut at the Public Theater this fall.
