In a press statement, executive producer Michael McCabe commented, "With Wicked continuing its phenomenally successful London run, we are very proud to also now be announcing this major tour of the UK and Ireland. We are absolutely delighted that the premiere will take place in the amazing city of Manchester which has such a prestigious history of hosting the regional premieres of so many world class musicals."
Wicked, which is based on the acclaimed novel by Gregory Maguire that re-imagined the stories and characters created by L. Frank Baum in "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," tells the untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, it is directed by Joe Mantello. It is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures Stage Productions, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone. Executive producer (UK) is Michael McCabe.
It has already been seen by over 35 million people around the world and has seven productions running concurrently. The original Broadway production is now entering its 10th year. The West End production is now in its seventh year at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre, where it has been seen by almost five million people.
Tickets for the Manchester run are now on sale for groups and Theatrecard priority members. Public booking opens Nov. 19. For more details, visit www.WickedTour.co.uk.
