Julian Fellowes, the Drama Desk Award-nominated book writer of Disney's Mary Poppins and creator of "Downton Abbey," has signed on to write and produce a new period drama for NBC, according to Deadline.com.

Entitled "The Gilded Age," the drama is described as a "sweeping epic" in the style of "Downton Abbey" and will depict the world of the millionaire titans of 1880s New York. The series will chronicle the lives of the princes of the American Renaissance and the fortunes they made and spent.

Fellowes won an Academy Award for the screenplay of "Gosford Park" and is also known for his work on "The Tourist" and "The Young Victoria," among others.
