Earlier reports indicated that Secondhand Lions, which has a book by Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Curtains) and a score by First Date songwriters Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary, would premiere at the 5th Avenue in August.
"This world premiere musical," according to the 5th Avenue, "harkens back to a simpler time, when a boy’s imagination was all that was needed to turn a summer on a Texas farm into the adventure of a lifetime. The tall tales that his two irascible uncles tell him – stories of heroism, hidden treasures, and beguiling princesses – take our young hero to the sands of Arabia and beyond."
The 5th Avenue is also presenting original productions of Monty Python's Spamalot, by Eric Idle, John du Prez and Neil Innes (Jan. 30-March 2, 2014); the Jeffrey Stock-Marc Acito musical A Room With a View, based on the E.M. Forster novel and directed by David Armstrong (April 8-May 4, 2014); and Bill Berry directing the Alan Menken-Howard Ashman musical Little Shop of Horrors, in a co-production with A Contemporary Theatre (April 12-June 29, 2014).
The 5th Avenue will also welcome the national tour of the Tony Award-winning revival of The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess (June 11-29, 2014).
