Director Tom Littler, currently represented in London by his production of Graham Greene's The Living Room at Jermyn Street Theatre, will make his Gate directorial debut to direct a cast that includes veteran actors Michael Pennington and Linda Marlowe.
They will play Edgar and Alice, a couple who have been married for over 30 years but whose relationship is of explosive mutual loathing. This new adaptation gives a rare opportunity to see not only part one but also the rarely performed second part of this European theatre classic.
Brenton's own original recent plays include Paul and Never So Good (both premiered at the National), In Extremis and Anne Boleyn (both premiered at Shakespeare's Globe), 55 Days and # aiww: The Arrest of Ai Weiwei (both at Hampstead Theatre, where the latter opens in April). He also provided the version of Buchner's Danton's Death seen at the National in 2010.
