Emmy Award winner Debra Messing, who stars in the NBC musical drama "Smash," has been cast in the lead role of an untitled CBS comedy pilot by Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Messing's casting is in second position to "Smash," which is unlikely to return for a third season due to low ratings and the move to a Saturday evening timeslot beginning April 6.
The single-camera project, based on an Israeli format, revolves around Shira (Messing), a married mother of three, as she struggles to balance family, life and work as a ghostwriter to a celebrity chef.
Messing will also receive a co-executive producer credit.
Rottenberg and Zuritsky, co-executive producers on the first season of "Smash," will write and executive produce the pilot. Avi Nir, Ran Telem, Daniela London-Dekel and Dana Eden are also executive producers.
