Sam and Alex With a Z!, a collection of songs from rising musical theatre songwriters Alexander Sage Oyen and Sam Salmond, was offered May 13 at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York City. Here are highlights from the evening.
The concert, which featured both new and old material from the songwriters, included performances from Corey Cott (Newsies), Molly Hager (Fat Camp), Claybourne Elder (Bonnie & Clyde), Emily Walton (Peter and the Starcatcher), George Salazar (Godspell), Jason Gotay (Bring It On), Haley Bond (Baby Case at NYMF), Gideon Glick (Spring Awakening), Jeremy Morse, Will Roland, Hana Slevin and musical director Benjamin Rauhala, among others.
The band included Rauhala with John Convertino (bass), David Cinquegrana (guitar) and Charlie Rosen (drums).
Oyen's Sidekicks was seen as part of the NYMF 2012 Reading Series, and his A Night Like This was produced at Florida State University and Princeton University. He can be heard on Scott Alan's "Live" album and was seen on VH1's "In Search of the Partridge Family." His albums include "Drafts" and "If I Knew Better."
Salmond wrote book and lyrics for Mormons, Mothers and Monsters, with music by Will Aronson, which was produced at Barrington Stage in 2011. He also penned the book and lyrics to Missing Parents, with music by Yoonmi Lee, which had a limited run at NYU in August 2012. He has participated in writer's residencies at Goodspeed, CAP21 and the Berkshire Playwright's Lab.
