The event, which runs from 11:15 AM-5 PM, is free and open to the public and also features appearances from the company's chairman Michael Chabon, president Susan Davenport Austin and executive director Cheryl Young as well as from speaker, author and columnist Frank Rich.
The Edward MacDowell Medal, according to press notes, "is a national award presented annually to an American artist for outstanding contribution to the arts." Past recipients have included Edward Hopper, Joan Didion, Merce Cunningham and Leonard Bernstein.
Sondheim, who won Original Score Tony Awards for his work on Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and Passion—not to mention the Tony for Lifetime Acheivement in 2008—was most recently represented on Broadway with the critically acclaimed revival of Follies. His Tony-winning Into the Woods was seen in a Shakespeare in the Park production at the Delacorte Theater. Passion was also recently revived Off-Broadway at Classic Stage Company.
