Directed by Gisli Örn Gardarsson, The Heart of Robin Hood will officially open Dec. 18 for a scheduled run through Jan. 19, 2014. Gardarsson's inventive and athletic adaptation of the classic tale had its U.K. premiere in 2011.
Tony Award-winning producer Barry Weissler (Pippin, Chicago) informed the press room at the 2013 Tony Awards that he was attached to the project. "It's the classic tale of Robin Hood done in an extremely sophisticated and contemporary manner," he said. Weissler was also involved in the A.R.T. revival of Pippin, which transferred to Broadway last season.
Dean (Mamma Mia!, As You Like It) will star as Robin with Lind (Ride the Tiger, "All My Children") as Marion and Sieber (Shrek, Spamalot, Pippin) as Pierre.
According to A.R.T., "The notorious Robin Hood and his band of outlaws steal from the rich, but they do not share their spoils with the poor and are unloved by the people, who must also pay unfair taxes to the evil Prince John as he plots to steal his brother's crown. In this time of chaos and fear, it is down to Marion to boldly protect the poor and convince Robin that he must listen to his heart if they are to save the country."
The Heart of Robin Hood has set design by Borkur Jonsson, costume design by Emma Ryott, lighting design by Bjorn Helgason and sound design by Jonathan Deans. Selma Björnsdóttir is the associate director and in charge of aerial creation.
Playwright Farr is the associate director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He is co-writer of the RSC's Night of the Soul, and Metamorphosis, The UN Inspector, The Nativity and Elton John's Glasses.
