The event also honors filmmaker and New Arts Axis director Wendy Levy and New York City Ballet principal dancer Tiler Peck with Princess Grace Statue Awards; 24 awards are also given to emerging artists in theatre, dance and film.
Tyson's stage work includes The Trip to Bountiful, The Corn Is Green and Carry Me Back to Morningside Heights. The Oscar nominee's screen work includes "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," "Sounder," "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" and "Fried Green Tomatoes."
"I was privileged to meet and work with the two time Princess Grace Awardee, Michael Wilson, on my recent return to the Broadway stage after a thirty year absence, in Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful," Tyson said in a statement. "I can say it was his exceptional brilliance as a director that gave me the confidence to give all I could as a performer and I am honored to be in his company along with the esteemed college of past honorees in accepting the Prince Rainier III Award.”
The Prince Rainier III Award, which includes a grant of $25,000 to the philanthropic organization of the recipient's choice, celebrates artists whose own excellence is combined with their dedication to cultivating the next generation of performing talent. Past honorees include Julie Andrews, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Glenn Close, George Lucas, Mandy Patinkin, Twyla Tharp, and Denzel and Pauletta Washington.
