The beloved film classic, which will air at 7 PM, features Andrews as Maria and Plummer as Captain von Trapp, as well as Charmian Carr (Liesl), Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich), Heather Menzies (Louisa), Angela Cartwright (Brigitta), Duane Chase (Kurt), Debbie Turner (Marta) and Kym Karath (Gretl).
The film, based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage classic, tells the true story of the postulant-turned-governess Maria and how she brought music into the lives and hearts of the widowed Captain and his seven children. The family became a successful singing group in Salzburg before escaping the Nazis on the eve of World War II.
The musical premiered on Broadway in 1959, where it broke box-office records and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The 1965 film version won the Best Picture Oscar. The Sound of Music features a libretto by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse and a score by Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics) that includes "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Edelweiss," "Something Good" and "So Long, Farewell." Mary Martin starred in the Broadway production.
NBC presented the special event The Sound of Music Live!, starring Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer, Dec. 5. Read about the presentation here.
