In honor of Larson's work, which was influenced by Sondheim — particularly the tick, tick… BOOM! song "Sunday," which takes a riff from Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George — a contest was offered for songwriters.
According to the website SondheimRemix.Blogspot.com, "We've issued a challenge to today's cutting edge producers, house/electronic musicians, spoken word artists, and music-makers of all styles: take any piece from Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George and remix it. Make it yours. Sample it. Adapt it. Run with it. Winners will present their pieces at this June 26th Lobby Project Event for Mr. Sondheim himself."
The deadline for submission has closed, and winners will be announced shortly. They will be chosen by a panel headed by artistic director Jeanine Tesori.
Winners will perform their work before the audience at the June 26 evening performance of tick, tick... BOOM!, when Sondheim will be in attendance. They will also receive two tickets to that night's performance as well as a stipend of $200.
Leslie Odom Jr. ("Smash") and Tony winners Lin-Manuel Miranda and Karen Olivo will star in tick, tick… BOOM!, which will be directed by Oliver Butler with choreography by Camille A. Brown and music direction by Chris Fenwick. Performances are scheduled for June 25-28.
Tickets begin at $25 and can be purchased at the New York City Center Box Office (West 55th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues), through CityTix at (212) 581-1212 or online at NYCityCenter.org.
