"Well, I guess New York loves Ms. Hedwig!" producer David Binder said in a statement. "Our girl is feeling it now! All of us at the Belasco Theatre couldn't be more thrilled. We're so grateful to all the folks who have turned out and we're especially thankful to all the fans that have flown in from around the world to join our celebration on 44th street. It has been an incredible journey."
A long-term charitable partnership between the Broadway production of the musical and Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), the nation's oldest and largest organization helping gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth to reach their full potential, was announced in March. In a private reception at the Belasco Theatre in June, the production presented a check for $100,000 to HMI. This first disbursement from Hedwig and the Angry Inch is part of the ongoing partnership with HMI. Read Playbill.com's interview with with Thomas Krever, CEO of the Hetrick-Martin Institute, here.
The Broadway premiere of the cult rock musical began previews March 29 at the Belasco Theatre, prior to an official opening April 22. Tony winner Harris will continue with the production through Aug. 17; Tony nominee Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon, Jersey Boys) will star in the musical beginning Aug. 20. He is contracted for eight weeks.
Hedwig features a book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. The landmark 1998 musical stars Harris as the titular Hedwig, a transgender singer fronting a fictional rock-n-roll band. Lena Hall, who recently starred as Nicola in Broadway's Tony-winning musical Kinky Boots and is also the lead singer of rock band The Deafening, co-stars with Harris as Yitzhak.
Harris and Hall won the Tony Awards for Best Lead Actor in a Musical and Best Featured Actress in a musical, respectively. Kevin Adams also won the Tony for Best Lighting Design. The production won Best Revival of a Musical.
