Old Globe Festival 2000 Hosts Roger Rees, New Trojan Women

Summer and fall in San Diego mean the Old Globe's Festival 2000. This year's edition will include a Love's Labours Lost directed by actor director Roger Rees, the West Coast premiere of David Rambo's God's Man in Texas and a new translation of Euripedes' The Trojan Women.
Summer and fall in San Diego mean the Old Globe's Festival 2000. This year's edition will include a Love's Labours Lost directed by actor director Roger Rees, the West Coast premiere of David Rambo's God's Man in Texas and a new translation of Euripedes' The Trojan Women. Festival 2000 kicks off July 2 on the Globe's outdoor stage, the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, with Henry V, William Shakespeare's history of the young, impish Prince Hal grown into the warrior king who claims and wins lands in France. Henry V opens July 8 for a run through Aug. 12. The director is to be announced. University of California, San Diego classics scholar Marianne McDonald translated and adapted the new version of Euripedes' The Trojan Women, which the Old Globe's Seret Scott (Blues for an Alabama Sky) will stage Sept. 3-Oct. 7. A classic anti-war statement, The Trojan Women is the story of Hecuba, Queen of Troy, and her family, as they struggle to find hope and courage in the ruins of their city after ten years of conflict. Following the closing of the new musical version of The Full Monty, the Old Globe's mainstage will be home to Alan Ayckbourn's Things We Do For Love (July 23-Sept. 2). Globe Associate Artist Joseph Hardy (Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce, The Weir) directs this romantic comedy about Barbara, who lets a school friend and her lover move into her home, where the only other tenant is the postman/handyman, obsessed with his landlady. Rees directs the mainstage production of Shakespeare's Love's Labours Lost, running Sept. 17-Oct. 28. Rees directed last season's The Merry Wives of Windsor for the Old Globe, alongside the Roundabout's current Arms and the Man and Williamstown Theatre Festival's The Taming of the Shrew, The Rivals and Jon Robin Baitz' The Film Society. God's Man in Texas, an examination of two Baptist preachers struggle for control of a Houston church, will run on the smaller Cassius Carter Centre Stage July 16-Aug. 26. A director has yet to be announced. The final production for the Cassius Carter Centre Stage has not been decided on.
