Prior to The 25th Annual New York Cabaret Convention, which will be presented Oct. 20-23 at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Manhattan nightspot 54 Below presents its own celebration of the art of cabaret.
The NYC Cabaret Festival plays the intimate venue Aug. 17, 24 and 31; show times are 7 PM and 9:30 PM all three evenings.
54 Below, according to press notes, "inaugurates a brand new festival saluting some of the finest talents in the NYC cabaret community. This August, join more than seventy uniquely gifted entertainers, among the most highly regarded in the city, as we celebrate work ranging from original compositions to treasured standards by the greats & absolutely everything in between. The NYC Cabaret Festival shines a bright spotlight on this most unique craft, & propels it into the future!"
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
