Magnuson, Wopat, Menzel to Play Joe's Pub in January and February

14 Dec 2000

Ann Magnuson, Tom Wopat, William Finn, Diamanda Galas and Idina Menzel will be among the theatre stars to play Joe's Pub, the cabaret space off Off-Broadway's Public Theater, in January and February of 2001.

Ann Magnuson, Tom Wopat, William Finn, Diamanda Galas and Idina Menzel will be among the theatre stars to play Joe's Pub, the cabaret space off Off-Broadway's Public Theater, in January and February of 2001.

Jan. 14 and 15, composer Finn (Falsettos) will present an encore engagement of "Infinite Joy: The Songs of William Finn," which had a successful run a couple months ago. Finn, employing a gruff, growling voice, will sing several of his own songs. In past shows, his guests have included Carolee Carmello, Stephen DeRosa and Mary Testa. Tickets are $25.

Testa will participate in an attraction called "The Last Lousy Moments of Love: The Songs of Bolcum & Weinstein," playing Jan. 22 and 29 and Feb. 5. William Bolcom and Arnold Weinstein have penned the operas McTeague and A View from the Bridge and the musicals Great Shot in the Willows and Casino Parade. Also singing will be Alice Playten and Sean Elliot.

Idina Menzel, the high intensity star of Rent and The Wild Party (and the upcoming Summer of '42), will, on February 12, 19 and 26, sing selections from her new CD, "Still I Can't Be Still."

If you're interested in the upcoming Public Theater play Dogeaters, you can get an eyeful of the playwright Jessica Hegedorn herself on Feb. 1, when she is featured in "an all-star drag, beauty, and talent show" celebrating the coming production.

Performance artist, composer and singer Diamanda Galas will take the stage on Jan. 3 and 5. Following her, on Feb. 14, will be a very different sort of theatre personality: Tom Wopat, late of Broadway's Annie Get Your Gun. In keeping with Valentine's Day, he will give voice to love songs from his album, "In The Still of The Night."

Performance artist and actress Ann Magnuson will present her new outing, "2001: Yesterday's Tomorrow Today," on Jan. 16 and 17. Singing songs by Harry Nilsson, Soft Cell, and others, she will answer the musical question: "What in the hell happened to those Pan Am shuttle flights to the moon that Stanley Kubrick promised us? Tickets are $25.

Joe's Pub is located at 425 Lafayette Street (between East 4th Street and Astor Place). For information on these and other winter attractions, call (212) 239-6200.
