Alan Cumming Signs on for TV Series, a Gay 'Hart to Hart'

13 Nov 2002

Alan Cumming is set to star in a new project for ABC that Variety describes as "'Hart to Hart' mixed with 'Trading Spaces.'" The series — being developed by Steve Martin, Joan Stein and Carsey-Werner-Mandabach — is titled "Mr. and Mr. Nash" and concerns a gay couple, both interior designers, who "stumble upon a murder each week."

Tony Award winner Cumming has already signed on to the project, and the search is on for his interior designer/detective partner. "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"'s Robert Palm will pen the show's script.

About the series, producer Stein told Variety, "We brought the idea to Carsey-Werner-Mandabach and all we had to do was say the title, and there was an immediate smile. We're excited about creating a show that combines character comedy and mystery. It's fun and silly. I would want to watch this show." Martin, who will host this year's Academy Awards, added, "I am proud to be a part of 'Mr. and Mr. Nash,' especially the part where it's a big hit."

A Tony Award winner for his portrayal of the Emcee in the Broadway revival of Cabaret, Cumming was recently back on the New York stage in the Art Party's mounting of Elle. The Scottish-born thespian has also appeared in such films as "Eyes Wide Shut," "Circle of Friends," Lion King director Julie Taymor's feature-film debut "Titus," "Spy Kids" and "The Anniversary Party" — which he co-wrote, co-directed and co-starred with Cabaret co-star Jennifer Jason Leigh. Cumming will also appear in the upcoming films "Nicholas Nickleby" and "X-Men 2," and his debut book, "Tommy's Tale," is now in stores.
