Mickey Welcomes Micky: Monkees' Dolenz to Join Tour of Disney's Aida

By Andrew Gans
10 Jan 2003

Micky Dolenz — of "The Monkees" fame — will join the tour of Aida in February.

The former drummer of one of the first-ever boy bands will play Zoser in the hit Elton John-Tim Rice musical when it begins performances at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Center in Fort Meyers, FL Fort Feb. 25. The news was announced on his official website, which also said that Dolenz will eventually play the role on Broadway next year. A spokesperson for the tour was unable to confirm the casting at this time.

Micky Dolenz was one of the stars of the sixties TV show "The Monkees," about a rock and roll band. The group sold over 65 million records, and their albums included "The Monkees," "More of the Monkees," "Headquarters" and "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd." Dolenz also starred in the West End musical The Point and later became a producer-director for the BBC and London Weekend Television. In 1996 the Monkees reunited for a 30-year summer tour around the U.S., and Dolenz most recently directed the hit TV show "Boy Meets World."

The Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Center is located at 8099 College Parkway SW in Fort Meyers, FL. For tickets, call (800) 440-7469.

Aida features a book by Linda Woolverton, Robert Falls and David Henry Hwang, sets and costumes by Bob Crowley, lighting by Natasha Katz, choreography by Wayne Cilento and direction by Robert Falls. The musical continues to play on Broadway at the Palace Theatre — Broadway and 47th Street — and tickets are available by calling the Disney hotline, (212) 307 4747.
