Off-Broadway's Stomp Celebrates Nine Years and Still Banging, Feb. 28

By Ernio Hernandez
28 Feb 2003

The Off-Broadway rhythm spectacle known as Stomp celebrates its ninth year at the Orpheum Theatre, Feb. 28.

Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas created Stomp, the show about banging everything from Zippo lighters to brooms to plungers, plastic bags and hubcaps opened in NYC in 1994.

The show has spawned five internationally touring companies, an Academy Award nominated short, an Emmy Award-winning HBO special, "Stomp Out Loud" and as well as an IMAX film called "Pulse."

At its seven year mark Off-Broadway, Stomp had gone through:

2,310 pairs of drumsticks
1, 134 wooden poles
406 British-made small garbage cans
322 British-made large garbage cans
2,450 American made garbage cans
9,100 boxes of Swan Vesta matches
546 gallons of black paint
4,680 pairs of earplugs

Stomp recently collaborated with Dolby Laboratories on new theatrical trailer which will debut in theatres this May. The 30-second live action 35 mm Dolby® Digital Surround EXTM film trailer features Stomp's performances brandishing Dolby's multichannel audio technologies. Stomp creators Cresswell and McNicholas concocted the trailer which will be used in cinemas as well as DVDs, broadcast and video gaming.

Tickets to Stompat New York's Orpheum Theatre, 126 Second Avenue are available through Ticketmaster at (212) 307- 4100 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
