Flower Drum Song Star Joins Silverstone and O’Neal in New NBC Pilot

By Andrew Gans
13 Mar 2003

Jodi Long, who currently stars as Madame Liang in the Broadway revival of Flower Drum Song, has been cast in a new pilot for NBC.

Directed by “Sex and the City” creator Darren Star, Variety reports that “Miss/Match” will star Alicia Silverstone as a Manhattan lawyer who also “doubles as a high-end matchmaker.” Film veteran Ryan O’Neal will play Silverstone’s father, a divorce lawyer who has a tenuous relationship with his daughter.

About the new pilot, NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker told the industry paper, “This is a good project. It's sort of the scripted version of what's happened with reality television in that it's got the romance, the emotion and all the other touchstones of why 'The Bachelor' and 'Joe Millionaire' have worked. It's also got great vision from Darren Star and Jeff Rake, and with Ryan O'Neal, you have an icon of the big screen who just lends tremendous creditability and charisma to this project."

Jodi Long made her Broadway debut at the age of seven in Nowhere to Go But Up, and her other Main Stem credits include Loose Ends, The Bacchae and Getting Away With Murder. She also appeared in the tour of Flower Drum Song, which starred her father, Larry Leung. Off-Broadway, Long has been seen in Old Money, Red, The Wash, Golden Child, Family Devotions and The Tooth of Crime, and regional audiences have seen the actress in Midsummer Night's Dream, Bus Stop and 1,000 Airplanes on the Roof. Her screen credits include "Cafe Americain," "All American Girl," "Sex and the City," "Patty Hearst," "Sour Sweet," "Striking Distance" and "The Hot Chick." Long is currently developing a show at the New York Theatre Workshop, Surfing DNA, which explores her ethnic and showbiz background.

Flower Drum Song ends its run March 16 at the Virginia Theatre.
