Murphy, Greenspan, Chalfant Perform in "Voices of Peace and Dissent" Off-Broadway Starting April 7

By Ernio Hernandez
04 Apr 2003

The Worth Street Theater Company will open "Voices of Peace and Dissent From Ground Zero" at The Tribeca Playhouse on April 7. The series will star actors, activists and celebrities reading anti-war writings in protest of the current war in Iraq.

The show will repeat every Monday night. The performances will feature a rotating cast that includes Kathleen Chalfant (Wit), Claire Higgins (Vincent in Brixton), Tovah Feldshuh (Golda's Balcony), David Greenspan (She Stoops to Comedy) and Donna Murphy (Passion).

The text for the evening will span many generations, ranging from the words of the ancient Greeks to such present day playwrights as Eric Bogosian (Talk Radio) and Tony Kushner (Angels in America).

Worth Street presented the revue-like "Stage Door Canteen" at their Tribeca space in response to the Sept. 11 attacks on the nearby World Trade Center. Ground Zero workers, volunteers and all uniformed personnel were admitted free to the show. Among the artists who performed were Kristin Chenoweth, Joey McIntyre, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Alice Ripley, Mario Cantone, Alice Ripley, Richard Kind, Daisy Eagan, Colin Quinn, Phylicia Rashad, Sandy Duncan, Cady Huffman, John Pizzarelli, Crista Moore, Darius De Haas, Queen Esther, Adriane Lenox, Jonathan Dokuchitz, Jessica Molaskey, Molly Price and Lea DeLaria.

Performances of "Voice of Peace and Dissent..." begin at 8 PM at The Tribeca Playhouse, 111 Reade Street (at West Broadway). A portion of the proceeds will go towards a pro-peace/Humanitarian organization. For tickets and information, call (212) 868-4444.
