Julia Sweeney Brings Family Way to L.A. April 28; Workshops Next Project

Julia Sweeney, who recently returned to the New York stage with Julia Sweeney in the Family Way, will bring that show to Los Angeles, while simultaneously workshopping her follow-up piece, Letting Go of God.
Family Way, which ran at Ars Nova Theater Off-Broadway this past winter, will begin previews at the Groundlings Theatre (7307 Melrose Avenue in Hollywood) on April 28. Opening is May 5 for a Mondays-only engagement through June 30.
Unsatisfied with performing one solo show, Sweeney will begin work on the new Letting Go of God on April 17 at the Knitting Factory's Alterknit space (7021 Hollywood Blvd.). It will open sometime in May.
Family Way was previously called Julia Sweeney: Guys & Babies, Sex & Gods. Read either title and you'll know what it's all about. Sweeney tells how, in her late 30s, she suddenly realized she had completely neglected her personal life. To rectify the situation, she adopted a child and launched into the world of dating as a new mom.
God, meanwhile, is also about what you'd expect: Sweeney's "journey toward non-belief." It all begins when two Mormon missionaries arrive at her door and start to challenge her Catholic faith.
Mark Brokaw, the Broadway and Off-Broadway director who has piloted new works by Craig Lucas, Kenneth Lonergan, Paula Vogel and Douglas Carter Beane, is at the helm of Family Way. His past work on solo shows includes Lisa Kron's 2.5 Minute Ride.
God Said, Ha! addressed Sweeney's battle with cancer and played briefly on Broadway. The actress spent four seasons on "Saturday Night Live," where she was best known for creating the sexually ambiguous Pat character.
