Mama's Back: Peters Returns to Gypsy on Broadway, May 9

By Ernio Hernandez
09 May 2003

Bernadette Peters, who has missed performances in Gypsy since May 5, returns to the spotlight as Rose in the Broadway revival May 9, a production spokesperson confirmed.

The ailing star who was battling a respiratory infection was advised by doctors to rest. Peters' standby, Maureen Moore, has been filling in at performances.

Peters is best known for her award-winning turns in Sunday in the Park with George, Song & Dance, Into the Woods and Annie Get Your Gun. The actress is the latest stage star to portray the stage mother Rose. The role was created by Ethel Merman in 1959 and also played to Tony winning effect by Angela Lansbury (1974) and Tyne Daly (1989).

Directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes — who is also represented on Broadway by the long-running Cabaret revival — Gypsy began previews at the Shubert Theatre March 31. The Arthur Laurents-Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim musical is the last musical revival to open this season, which officially ends May 7.

Gypsy plays at the Shubert Theatre, 225 West 44th Street. Tickets are available by calling (212) 239-6200 or click here.
