Life x 3 to Conclude Broadway Run on June 29

By Robert Simonson
29 May 2003

The limited run ofLife x 3, French dramatist Yasmina Reza's new work, which officially opened March 31 at Circle in the Square, will close on June 29.

In early April, shortly after opening, the play announced a brief extension to July 6, but has now reverted back the original end date. The change is due to an actor's scheduling needs.

Helen Hunt, John Turturro, Brent Spiner and Linda Emond are two warring couples (warring with the other marrieds; warring within their own marriages) acting out a trio of versions of the same awful evening. The story begins as Hunt and Turturro are trying out several unsuccessful methods for putting their son to bed. Suddenly, their dinner guests arrive, a renowned scientist (Spiner), whom the insecure Turturro hopes will recommend him for a promotion, and his defeated, dipsomaniacal wife (Emond). One problem — the twosome have shown up 24 hours early!

The unexpected evening then splits into a trio of possible outcomes, all fraught with tension and roiling undercurrents — with a soon-to-be published academic paper, a telephone call, the recalcitrant tot, a store of Cheez-its and Chocolate Fingers, several bottles of white wine and four lifetimes of frustration all playing a part.

Though the play opened to mixed reviews, the producers have little to worry about. Armed with a hefty advance sale and a marquee name in Helen Hunt, Life x 3 is doing well at the box office.

Linda Emond was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play.
