Rees, Wood Find Dissonance in MTC New Play Reading, June 2

By Kenneth Jones
02 Jun 2003

The conflicts and fractures within a string quartet are explored in Dissonance, the first play by British novelist Damian Lanigan, getting a reading in Manhattan Theatre Club's "6@6" series 6 PM June 2.

Kate Whoriskey directs a reading cast that includes Roger Rees and Frank Wood.

In the play, a quartet celebrating its 10th anniversary is on the brink of a major New York City concert, allowing for tensions to be exposed.

The readings in the "6@6" series are coordinated by MTC's play development department. Five plays and one musical are in the spring series this year.

David Auburn's Proof was heard in "6@6" before MTC shepherded it to a full Off-Broadway staging and then (with producing partners) to Broadway. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play.

Works heard in the series are generally making their New York reading debuts.

Each reading takes place on a Monday night at 6 PM on the 8th floor of Manhattan Theatre Club's Creative Center, 311 West 43rd Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. For information, call (212) 399-3000 ext. 163. Reservations are recommended as seating is limited.

Coming up in the series are the musical, Chrysalis, by Gilles Chiasson, June 9; David Folwell's Drug Buddy, about a dropout waking from what seems like a long nightmare in Texas, June 16; and Joe Hortua's Bay Windows and Shakes, about two couple coping with changing lifestyles and attitudes as they outgrow a college friendship, June 23.
