Roundabout Sets Stewart Caretaker, Brokaw-Helmed Orchard and Threepenny Opera

The Roundabout Theatre Company has confirmed part of its upcoming 2003-04 season, while enticing would-be subscribers with a few other possible attractions.

The nonprofit announced a new Wallace Shawn adaptation of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's classic musical The Threepenny Opera, to be directed by Scott Elliott for the 2004-2005 season. Also, as expected, Patrick Stewart will return to Broadway in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker under the direction of David Jones. The production will play at the American Airlines Theatre.

Additionally confirmed for the 2003-2004 Roundabout season is the Mark Brokaw-helmed revival of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. The Russian classic drama will also play at the American Airlines Theatre.

Other works being considered for the upcoming season include the previously reported Spring Awakening, a new musical featuring the music of pop singer Duncan Sheik with director Michael Mayer on tap; Assassins, the Stephen Sondheim-John Weidman musical to be directed by Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello; a revival of Brian Friel's Faith Healer, about an Irish con man; and the classic courtroom drama Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose with Scott Ellis as the scheduled director.

Finally, two new possibilities have been mentioned on the Roundabout website: Larry Shue's farce The Foreigner, about an Englishman who learns many secrets while under the guise of a foreigner who doesn't know English, to be directed by Scott Schwartz; and Lynn Nottage's Intimate Apparel, about an African-American seamstress who makes clothing for New York City socialites at the beginning of the 20th century, as directed by Daniel Sullivan.

Schwartz directed the Shue comedy at the Berkshire Theatre Festival last summer. The play would be the Bat Boy director's first solo Broadway credit (he co-directed Jane Eyre with John Caird). The Nottage play, meanwhile, had a couple regional productions this past season.

The Roundabout commissioned Wallace Shawn ("The Designated Mourner," "Aunt Dan and Lemon") to translate and adapt the original German book and lyrics of The Threepenny Opera by Brecht and Kurt Weill. Scott Elliott will direct the 1800's England-set musical which last saw the Broadway stage in 1989 as 3 Penny Opera, starring Sting.
