Patrick Stewart Is The Master Builder in London Staging, June 12

By Paul Webb and Andrew Gans
12 Jun 2003

The London revival of The Master Builder — starring Patrick Stewart — begins performances at the Albery Theatre June 12 prior to an official opening June 18.

Henrik Ibsen’s play, directed by Anthony Page, has sets by Hildegard Bechtler, costume design by Deirdre Clancy, lighting by Howard Harrison and sound by John Leonard and John Owens. It is produced by Duncan C. Weldon and Paul Elliott for Triumph Entertainment Partners Ltd., and also stars Sue Johnston, Lisa Dillion, Edward De Souza, Katherine Manners, Stephen Kennedy and Jonathan Hackett.

The Master Builder tells the story of Halvard Solness (Patrick Stewart), an aging builder and architect who has ruthlessly built up his reputation at the expense of his relationship with his wife and colleagues. Solness fears being usurped by youth, while at the same time desperately needing to be nurtured by it. When a vivacious young woman arrives to collect on a decade-old promise, she inspires him to build castles in the air with tragic consequences.

On Broadway Patrick Stewart has starred in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, The Ride Down Mt. Morgan and several engagements of his one-man A Christmas Carol. Stewart also originated the role of Jean Luc-Picard in the hit TV series “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” and his film credits include “Star Trek: Insurrection,” “Jeffrey,” “Dune,” “Lady Jane,” “L.A. Story,” “Robin Hood: Men in Tights,” “Conspiracy Theory” and “X-Men.”
