Marian Seldes and Yeardley Smith Put "Women Center Stage" at NYC Fest Through July 13

By Ernio Hernandez
30 Jun 2003

Tony Award-winning actress Marian Seldes (A Delicate Balance) and Yeardley Smith ("The Simpsons") are among the many artists who will take part in the third annual "Women Center Stage" festival at The Culture Project's 45 Bleecker space.

The festival features over 40 works of theatre, dance and music — all written, directed and performed by women. The theatre pieces range from readings to workshops to solo performances. The event runs through July 13 and admission is free.

Among the many works featured include:

  • The Good Life Written and performed by Yeardley Smith and directed by Jean Wagner. A woman's darkly comic journey through her life in and out of show-biz.
  • Kathe Kollwitz: Berlin Written by Rebecca Ortese and starring Marian Seldes. A real-life story of a German artist who spoke out against the Nazis.
  • A Woman of No Importance Written by Oscar Wilde, adapted and directed by Billie James. An adaptation of Wilde's story reset on an African-American-owned plantation near New Orleans on the eve of the Civil War.
  • Would You Like a Potato Latke? Written by Gail Drucker and directed by Gail Drucker and Kathy Levitt. Billed as "'Sex and the City' for senior citizens.
  • Nine Parts of Desire Written and performed by Heather Raffo and directed by Eva Breneman. An Iraqi-American playwright tells stories of a generation of women.
  • Gringita Written by Kate Bell and directed by Emanuel Bocchieri. A tale of faith and loss set during the Reagan era.
  • 17 Guys I Fucked Written and performed by Christen Clifford and directed by Julie Kramer. A woman looks for love and self-esteem in all the wrong places.
  • Berlin/Berlin Written by Oana Hock Cajal and directed by Lauren Costa. Eight strangers journey together back to Berlin.
  • Persona Written and performed by Kate Kohler Amory and directed by Rebecca Holderness. A ride into madness, acting and punk rock.
  • Kristin Hoffmann Lyrics written and performed by Kristin Hoffmann. A collection of original songs that tell one woman's story.
