Gyllenhaal would play Hal, the protégé and admirer of a math professor who falls for his mentor's daughter. The young actor has been seen in such films as "Moonlight Mile," "The Good Girl," "Bubble Boy" and "Donnie Darko."
Paltrow, whose deal is near closed, will reprise the role of the daughter which she played at London's Donmar Warehouse under the direction of Madden. The actress won an Academy Award for her work in "Shakespeare in Love" and has appeared in "Emma," "Great Expectations" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley."
No other roles have yet been cast for the film.
Proof opened on Broadway on Oct. 24, 2000 following a run at Off-Broadway's Manhattan Theatre Club. Mary-Louise Parker, who won a Tony Award for her performance, starred opposite Ben Shenkman, Larry Bryggman and Johanna Day.
