New Duncan Sheik and Laurence O'Keefe Musicals Play at CT's O’Neill Center, Aug. 2-10

By Ernio Hernandez
02 Aug 2003

The stagings of The Nightingale and Sarah, Plain and Tall, the new musicals by Duncan Sheik and Laurence O'Keefe, play at the Eugene O'Neill Music Theatre Conference, Aug. 2-10.

The current Broadway musical Avenue Q was presented last summer at Waterford, Connecticut's Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. The complex, which houses the Playwrights Conference and Music Theater Conferences, among others, is celebrating its 26th anniversary summer season of developing works.

Pop singer Duncan Sheik, whose other new musical, Spring Awakening, is under consideration for the upcoming Roundabout Theatre season, will present The Nightingale at the Dina Merrill Theater, Aug. 2-10.

With a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, The Nightingale is a take on the Hans Christian Andersen work in which a young Chinese emperor finds hope in a bird and a common girl. Lou Jacob directs a cast featuring Eric Bondoc, Tom Flynn, Harriett D. Foy, Colby Foytik, Kimberly Jajuan, Manu Narayan, Randy Reyes, Denise Summerford and Price Walden.

Kaitlin Hopkins played the matriarch in Off-Broadway's Bat Boy, which featured the music and lyrics of Laurence O'Keefe. The two combine anew with Sarah, Plain and Tall set to play at the Rufus and Margo Rose Theater Barn, Aug. 2-9.

The musical, based on the book by Patricia MacLachlan, features O'Keefe's music with book by Julia Jordan and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. The three previously collaborated on The Mice, which played as part of 3hree at Philadelphia's Prince Music Theater.

In Sarah, Plain and Tall, a Kansas widower seeking a wife and a mother for his children gets something he wasn't expecting. Joe Calarco directs a cast that also includes Becca Ayers, Kenny Boys, Stacie Morgain Lewis, Josh Park, Jim Price and Debra Wiseman.

For tickets to events at the O’Neill Theater Center, call the box office at (860) 443-1238. For more information, visit their website at www.oneilltheatercenter.org.
