Robards, Vereen, Kane, Hall, Perlman Among Upcoming Casts of The Exonerated

By Ernio Hernandez

Sam Robards, Ben Vereen, Carol Kane, Anthony Michael Hall and Rhea Perlman are among the stars to join the upcoming casts of Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen's The Exonerated at Off-Broadway's 45 Bleecker Theatre.

The Exonerated is drawn from the stories of a half-dozen former death row inmates who shared a variety of experiences and feelings with playwrights Blank and Jensen. Most described losing their faith in the justice system, while discovering that it was the resources available to a defense team that made the difference between achieving justice or experiencing a miscarriage of it. Bob Balaban (the actor seen in "A Mighty Wind") directs.

Robards, son of Lauren Bacall and the late Jason Robards, earned a Tony nomination for his turn in the Broadway revival of The Man Who Had All the Luck. Vereen, Tony Award winner for Pippin, was recently seen in Fosse and I'm Not Rappaport. Kane, known for her quirky turns in "Taxi" and "The Princess Bride," has appeared on the New York stage in The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds and WASP and Other Plays.

"Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" brat packer Hall grew into more adult roles in "Edward Scissorhands," "61*" and a starring turn in the current television series "The Dead Zone." Perlman, known to television audiences as the brassy barmaid Carla in "Cheers," appeared on Broadway as a replacement in The Tale of the Allergist's Wife.

Past cast members of this run have included Eric Bogosian, Peter Boyle, Connie Britton, Avery Brooks, Gabriel Byrne, Judy Collins, Tim Daly, Kristin Davis, Fran Drescher, Richard Dreyfuss, Cary Elwes, Mia Farrow, Peter Gallagher, Jeff Goldblum, Sara Gilbert, Tony Goldwyn, Sarah Jones, Robert Klein, Christine Lahti, Darrell Larson, Chad Lowe, Andrea Martin, Richard Masur, Andrew McCarthy, Esai Morales, Rob Morrow, Joe Morton, Bebe Neuwirth, Harold Perrineau, Amanda Plummer, Aidan Quinn, Lynn Redgrave, Eric Roberts, Jay O. Sanders, Richard Schiff, Kyra Sedgwick, Ally Sheedy, Brooke Shields, John Spencer, Mary Steenburgen, Lee Tergesen, Marlo Thomas, Kathleen Turner, Robert Vaughn, Ben Vereen, Debra Winger and Montel Williams.

Upcoming casts will include Robards (Aug. 19-31), Vereen (Aug. 21-31), Kane (Aug. 26-Sept. 7), Lainie Kazan (Sept. 9-14), Perlman (Sept. 30-Oct. 12) and Marlo Thomas (14-19). Artists and dates are subject to change.

The Exonerated plays at Off-Broadway's 45 Bleecker, where it opened Oct. 10, 2002. 45 Bleecker is located at 45 Bleecker Street. For reservations, call (212) 307 4100. For more information, visit www.45bleecker.com.
