Original Off-Broadway Cast Members Reprise Assassins Roles for L.A.'s Reprise!

By Ernio Hernandez
27 Aug 2003

Original Off-Broadway cast members Patrick Cassidy, Annie Golden and Lyn Greene will be joined by Anthony Crivello, Harry Groener, John Mahoney, Kevin Chamberlin, Kevin Earley and Ben Platt in a one-night concert version of John Weidman and Stephen Sondheim's musical, Assassins, for Los Angeles' Reprise!

Assassins will be directed by David Lee with musical direction by Steve Orich. The concert will perform at UCLA's Freud Playhouse, Sept. 15 at 8 PM.

The musical, which debuted at Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons in 1990, centers on nine presidential assassins and would-be assassins. The original cast featured Jace Alexander as Lee Harvey Oswald, Cassidy as Balladeer, Victor Garber as John Wilkes Booth, Greg Germann as John Hinckley, Golden as Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, Greene as Emma Goldman, Jonathan Hadary as Charles Guiteau, Eddie Korbich as Guiseppe Zangara, Terrence Mann as Leon Czolgosz, Debra Monk as Sara Jane Moore and Lee Wilkof as Samuel Byck. The original Off-Broadway staging lasted 71 performances.

The Weidman-Sondheim musical was slated to be revived for its Broadway premiere by the Roundabout Theatre Company in 2001, but was postponed following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Douglas Sills, Neil Patrick Harris, Denis O'Hare, Raul Esparza, John Dossett and Mario Cantone were the among the names set to star in the Roundabout revival.

Assassins, with director Joe Mantello still on board, is still under consideration for the non-profit's upcoming season. Though no official announcement has been made, Roundabout artistic director Todd Haimes previously told Variety that the show would be housed at Studio 54 when Cabaret closed. The company has since bought the converted former disco, now a Broadway house. Roundabout announced on Aug. 27 that Cabaret would close this fall.

Tickets to the Reprise! Assassins are available by calling the UCLA Central Ticket Office at (310) 825-2101. For more information, visit www.reprise.org
