Complete Song List Announced for Broadway on Broadway Concert; Griffith, Tartaglia, Butler and Pitre Among Performers

By Andrew Gans
02 Sep 2003

The complete song list for the 12th annual Broadway on Broadway concert, to be held on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11:30 AM, has been announced.

Co-hosted by Tony Award winners Nathan Lane and Jane Krakowski, this year's free outdoor concert in Times Square will feature numbers from almost every musical now playing as well as sneak peeks from upcoming productions.

Spectators — which are expected to number 50,000 — will have the opportunity to enjoy scenes from Hairspray, The Producers, Nine, Gypsy, Big River, Avenue Q, Mamma Mia!, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Chicago, Cabaret, Rent and The Phantom of the Opera as well as those from the new productions of Wicked, Little Shop of Horrors, Taboo and Never Gonna Dance. The afternoon will also offer appearances from Antonio Banderas, Polly Bergen, Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill and Kyle MacLachlan.

As of press time, the roster of entertainment — which is subject to change — includes the following tunes:

"If You Were Gay" from Avenue Q: John Tartaglia, Rick Lyon and Jennifer Barnhart
"Muddy Waters" from Big River: Tyrone Giordano, Michael McElroy and Daniel Jenkins
"I Don't Care Much" from Cabaret: Jon Secada
"We Both Reached for the Gun" from Chicago: Melanie Griffith, Brent Barrett and Company
"Baby June & Her Newsboys" from Gypsy: Heather Tepe and Company
"Good Morning Baltimore" from Hairspray: Kathy Brier and Company
"Suddenly Seymour" from Little Shop of Horrors: Kerry Butler, Hunter Foster and Company
"Money, Money, Money" from Mamma Mia!: Louise Pitre and Company
"Pick Yourself Up" from Never Gonna Dance: Nancy Lemenager and Noah Racey
"Seasons of Love" from Rent: the Company
"Stranger in This World" from Taboo: Euan Morton and Company
"Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera: Hugh Panaro
"I Wanna Be a Producer" from The Producers: Don Stephenson and Company
"Forget About the Boy" from Thoroughly Modern Millie: Sutton Foster and Company
"The Wizard & I" from Wicked: Idina Menzel

Two-time Tony Award winner Donna Murphy will also perform a selection from Wonderful Town, and cast members from the Tony-winning revival of Nine will also offer a performance.

Presented by Toys "R" Us, Continental Airlines and Visa and produced by The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc., the free Broadway on Broadway event will also be filmed by WNBC-4 for broadcast on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7 PM. In a statement, League President Jed Bernstein said, "Broadway on Broadway is a great way to start the new season, by bringing the finest Broadway talent out of the theatres onto a giant outdoor stage in the heart of the theatre district for a free Sunday concert for all New Yorkers (and the people who love to visit them) to enjoy."

Founded in 1930, The League of American Theatres and Producers boasts over 500 members, including theatre owners, operators, producers and presenters of Broadway productions in New York and throughout the U.S. and Canada. For more information, go to www.BroadwayonBroadway.com.
