Film's "Goodbye Girl" Marsha Mason to Star in Mee's Wintertime Off-Broadway

By Ernio Hernandez
09 Sep 2003

Marsha Mason.
Marsha Mason.

Marsha Mason will star in the Second Stage Theatre's production of Charles L. Mee's comedy Wintertime as part of the Off-Broadway company's 25th anniversary season.

Mason is a four-time Academy Award nominee for her turns in the films "Cinderella Liberty," and three movies — "The Goodbye Girl," "Chapter Two," and "Only When I Laugh" — penned by her husband at the time, Neil Simon. The actress has played the New York stage in Happy Birthday Wanda June, The Deer Park, The Good Doctor, King Richard III and Night of the Iguana.

Mee's Wintertime follows a man who is about to propose at a secluded snowbound house when he finds that his mother and her lover already occupy the cabin. As if that was not enough, the father then shows up with his boyfriend.

The coupled comedy has already seen stagings at the La Jolla Playhouse, Seattle's ACT, Minneapolis' Guthrie Lab and New Haven's Long Wharf. The new work from the author of First Love, True Love and Big Love finally makes its way to New York via Second Stage. Longtime collaborator David Schweizer (Full Circle and The Investigation of the Murder in El Salvador) directs.

Wintertime is a co-production with New Jersey's McCarter Theatre Center — where it will play, Oct. 14-Nov. 2, prior to its Off-Broadway engagement (dates not set.)

For subscriptions to the 25th anniversary season at Second Stage, 307 West 43rd Street (off 8th Avenue), call (212) 541-4516 or visit www.secondstagetheatre.com.
