LAByrinth Theatre Company Plays Celebrity Charades at Benefit, Sept. 29

By Ernio Hernandez
22 Sep 2003

The stars will silently shine as LAByrinth Theatre Company hosts its first benefit on Sept. 29 (featuring a game of celebrity charades) and presents Madonna with the first Dave Hoghe Award for dedication to the company.

LAB artistic directors Philip Seymour Hoffman (Long Day's Journey Into Night) and John Ortiz (References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot) will be on hand with company members Judy Reyes ("Scrubs"), Sam Rockwell ("Matchstick Men") and Yul Vazquez ("Bad Boys II"), as well as "Saturday Night Live" stars Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph, "Lord of the Rings" stars Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monoghan. Also slated to appear are Robin Williams, Amy Sedaris and Justin Theroux.

Madonna will be the recipient of the inaugural Dave Hoghe Award for "her artistic courage and outstanding dedication to LAByrinth Theatre Company," as a release states. The songstress helped LAByrinth bring its production of Jesus Hopped the A Train to London's West End in 2002.

The event is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM at the Daryl Roth Theatre in downtown Manhattan. Tickets are available by calling (212) 279-4200 or visiting www.ticketcentral.com.

THE LAByrinth Theater Company began in 1992 when 13 actors joined forces to form a place to work. The goal was to create a home where the group, for three hours each week, could engage in a variety of theatrical exercises designed to "push each others' limits and bind together into a tight-knit, uninhibited and impassioned ensemble - one in which each member is given the opportunity and support, not just to act, but to write, direct, produce, sweep, paint, hang lights, etc."

The company, headed up by Hoffman and Ortiz, is in residence at the Public Theater for the 2003-04 season. The troupe is best known for its stagings of Stephen Adly Guirgis' works Jesus Hopped the A Train and Our Lady of 121st Street — which recently enjoyed a commercial run at the Union Square Theatre.
