Danica McKellar, the actress who played the adored Winnie Cooper on "The Wonder Years," stars in the San Diego Repertory Theatre staging of David Auburn's Proof as the season opener begins, Sept. 27.

The Auburn Pulitzer Prize winner is slated to open at the southern California venue Oct. 3 for a run through Oct. 26.

McKellar will star as the daughter of a mathematical genius opposite Sam Woodhouse as her father, Francis Gercke as her love interest and Cheryl Kenan Fording as her sister. Delicia Turner Sonnenberg and Woodhouse direct.

Proof opened on Broadway on Oct. 24, 2000 following a run at Off-Broadway's Manhattan Theatre Club. The play went on to win the year's top prizes — the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Mary-Louise Parker, who won a Tony Award for her performance, starred opposite Ben Shenkman, Larry Bryggman and Johanna Day. A movie version — starring the show's London stage star Gwyneth Paltrow— is currently in the works

McKellar recently made guest appearances on television's "The West Wing" and has also appeared on "Static Shock," "King of The Hill," "Justice League;" "The Division," "Even Stevens" and "Working". She also wrote, produced and co-directed the award winning short film "speechless."

Ironically, the actress — who will play the role of a mathematical whiz — graduated summa cum laude from UCLA in 1998 with a departmental honors degree in mathematics. "As an undergrad," according to biographical notes, "she co-authored a research paper that helped solve a new problem in the area of Statistical Mechanics, now known as the Chayes-McKellar-Winn theorem... and was invited to speak to a subcommittee of Congress on the importance of women in math and science."

San Diego Rep's 2003-2004 season also includes the Reduced Shakespeare Company staging of All The Great Books (abridged) by Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor; with additional material by Matthew Croke and Michael Faulkner (Oct. 25 Nov. 23), Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol adapted by D. W. Jacobs with original music by Steve Gunderson (Dec. 5-28), Women Who Steal by Carter W. Lewis (Jan. 24-Feb. 22, 2004), the world premieres of Three Mo' Divas written and directed by Marion J. Caffey (March 13-April 18, 2004) and Earthquake Sun written and directed by Luis Valdez (April 17-May 18, 2004).

Tickets to Proof and other shows at the Rep, 79 Horton Plaza in San Diego, CA can be purchased by calling (619) 544-1000 or online at www.sandiegorep.com.
