15th Annual GLAAD Media Award Nominees Include Avenue Q, Taboo and "Angels in America"; Cherry Jones a Special Honoree

| photo by Carol Rosegg and Joan Marcus | Nominees for the 15th Annual GLAAD Media Awards honoring "fair, accurate and inclusive" representations of gay individuals in the media, were announced Dec. 8.
The annual awards honor the best in journalism, film, TV and theatre. This year's nominations include three theatre-related categories: Outstanding Los Angeles Theatre; Outstanding New York Theatre: Broadway and Off; and Outstanding New York Theatre: Off Off-Broadway. Among the Broadway productions receiving nominations are Taboo, the Rosie O'Donnell produced Boy George musical; Avenue Q, the comedic mix of puppets and people that transferred to Broadway after a hit run at the Vineyard Theatre; and I Am My Own Wife, the one-person show about a German transvestite, which also began its life Off-Broadway.
The Mike Nichols-directed HBO presentation of Angels in America, featuring a screenplay by Tony Award winner Tony Kushner, was also recognized in the Outstanding Television Movie or Mini-Series category. The epic work will compete in a field that also includes "Cambridge Spies," "Normal," "Soldier's Girl" and "Tipping the Velvet." The first part of Kushner's "Angels" — starring Meryl Streep, Al Pacino and Emma Thompson — debuted on HBO Dec. 7. The second half will premiere Dec. 14.
GLAAD will also recognize several Special Honorees at its Media Awards ceremonies, which will be held in Los Angeles on March 27, 2004 (Kodak Theatre), in New York on April 12 (Marriott Marquis) and in San Francisco on June 5 (Westin St. Francis). Those individuals who will be honored include Tony Award winner Cherry Jones, "Will & Grace" star Megan Mullally, Hairspray's John Waters, "Far From Heaven" Oscar nominee Julianne Moore and horror writer Clive Barker. The PBS program "In the Life" will also be lauded.
