"I'm playing the storyteller, so basically I'm the voice of Tarzan," Pascal revealed to Playbill On-Line. "So I get to sing all these really wonderful Phil Collins songs, which is a lot of fun. I love the people at Disney and I look forward to working with them again."
The Disney musical Tarzan will be workshopped at the end of January 2004, according to the actor.
Pascal, who recently appeared in the Actors' Fund benefit concert of Chess, is best known for his theatrical debut as Roger in the original cast of Rent — which he played Off-Broadway, on Broadway and in London. He followed that Tony Award nominated turn with a three-year run in Broadway's Aida as Radames. Pascal, who also enjoys a recording career, will release his second solo album on Sh-K Boom Records this spring. The actor was also seen in the recent film "School of Rock."
David Henry Hwang (Flower Drum Song), who has written the book, previously told Playbill On-Line that Collins is writing additional songs for the project and Bob Crowley (Aida) will design and direct. Matthew Morrison, the heartthrob of the Tony Award-winning Hairspray, played the title role in the previous workshop of the musical. No casting has been announced for the upcoming reading.
