It's Outta There: Bway's Take Me Out Closes Jan. 4

| photo by Mark Douet | Take Me Out, the lauded Richard Greenberg play that won the 2003 Tony Award for Best Play, ends its run Jan. 4, 2004, after 27 previews and 356 performances.
Director Joe Mantello and Featured Actor Denis O'Hare also won Tonys for their work on the provocative play, which follows the exploits of a Yankees-like ball team during an event-filled season.
The play, which is part sports soap opera, part comedy, part tragedy and overflowing with American themes, opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre Feb. 27, 2003, following previews from Feb. 4 and after playing world premiere runs at London's Donmar Warehouse and The Public Theater in 2002 (the staging was an international co production).
Take Me Out is produced on Broadway by Carole Shorenstein Hays and Freddy DeMann. There has been talk of a national tour of the work, but no official announcement. The unit set, relatively small cast and the potent content — including race and sexuality themes and lots of on-stage nudity — would make it a likely hit for major markets.
"We are thrilled with the success of Take Me Out, and we congratulate Richard Greenberg, Joe Mantello, and the entire cast on a long run and their many awards," the producers said in a statement. "It has been an honor for us to produce Richard's beautiful play and it has been so gratifying for us to see the play succeed on Broadway. For the thousands of people who have seen Take Me Out and for the thousands more who will see it in its many, many productions around the world, we say, 'Thank you for proving us right: People do want to see good drama, good plays, good stories, on Broadway.'"
Take Me Out's cast includes Daniel Sunjata (also Tony-nommed), Denis O'Hare, Neal Huff, Myk Watford, Kevin Carroll, Anthony Joseph De Santis, Maximillian Alexander, Robert M. Jiménez, Shane McRae, Don Sparks and James Yaegashi.
O'Hare's next project is the Broadway staging of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins.
