Allergist's Wife Makes N.J. Premiere Jan. 7

Charles Busch's Tony-nominated play, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, makes its New Jersey premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse Jan. 7.

Emmy Award-winning actress Robin Strasser heads the cast in the title role with Lenny Wolpe as Dr. Ira Taub. Joining the twosome is Shirl Bernheim, repeating her Broadway work as the cantankerous Frieda. The company also includes Meg Foster as Lee Green and Ariel Shafir as Mohammed. Directed by Carl Andress, the Busch comedy will play the New Jersey theatre through Feb. 8, 2004, with an official opening night scheduled for Jan. 11 at 7:30 PM.

After a successful run Off-Broadway, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife played Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre 777 performances: Oct. 12, 2000-Sept. 15, 2002. The original Broadway cast included Lavin, Michele Lee, Tony Roberts, Shirl Bernheim and Anil Kumar. The play received three 2001 Tony nominations, include one for Best Play.

Robin Strasser received a 1982 Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama for her work on "One Life to Live." Her Broadway theatre credits include The Shadow Box and Chapter Two. Strasser was a founding member of the American Conservatory Theatre, and has worked at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Mark Taper Forum.

Lenny Wolpe appeared on Broadway in Onward Victoria, Copperfield, Mayor, Into the Light and the recent revival of The Sound of Music. He played Herbie opposite Betty Buckley's Rose in the Paper Mill production of Gypsy, and he recently starred in the Goodspeed mounting of The Baker's Wife. Wolpe's television credits include "Six Feet Under," "Ally McBeal," "King of Queens" and "Strong Medicine."

On Broadway Shirl Bernheim was seen in The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and Grease. Her other theatrical credits include Old Lady's Guide to Survival, Cyrano de Bergerac, Over the River and Through the Woods, Steel Magnolias, Social Security, George Washington Slept Here and The Man Who Came to Dinner. Bernheim has been seen on screen in "Anna," "I'm Not Rappaport," "Commandments," "Broadway Damage," "Guiding Light," "Law & Order" and "The Sopranos."
