It's Over: Nobody Don't Like Yogi to Close Jan. 18

Ben Gazzara in Nobody Don't Like Yogi

Nobody Don't Like Yogi, the one-man bio-play starring Ben Gazzara as baseball great Yogi Berra—the man who said "It ain't over til it's over"—will close on Jan. 18. It will have played a total of 97 performances and seven previews at the Lamb's Theatre.

A final, Jan. 19 performance, will be an Actors' Fund benefit.

Previews began Oct. 21. Thomas Lysaght wrote the one-man work, which shows Berra stepping foot in Yankee Stadium, his old stomping ground, after a 14-year absence. Berra is the lovable one-time Yankee player and coach, and three-time American League MVP, who is known for his nonsensical aphorisms as much as for his play on the field. Among his best remembered observations are "It's deja vu all over again," "Nobody goes there anymore—it's too crowded," and "If the people don't want to come out to the ballpark, nobody's going to stop them."

The show had runs this past summer at Bay Street Theatre and Syracuse Stage. It opened at Bay Street in Sag Harbor, Long Island, on May 20 and lasted until June 1. The Syracuse run ran Aug. 19-Sept. 7.

Gazzara, a stage and film veteran, has starred in "The Spanish Prisoner" and "The Big Lebowski" as well as the original Broadway production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Next up at the Lamb's is the silent-movie-style entertainment, Silent Laughter, starting March 8.
