Adam Sandler's "The Wedding Singer" Heads to Broadway

By Andrew Gans
and Ernio Hernandez
09 Jan 2004

The 1998 Adam Sandler film "The Wedding Singer" is headed to Broadway.

New Line Cinema announced it will team with Margo Lion — the team that turned a film called "Hairspray" into a mammoth Broadway hit — to bring The Wedding Singer to Broadway sometime during the 2005-06 season. The musical will feature lyrics by Chad Beguelin and music by Matt Sklar. Tim Herlihy, who wrote the screenplay for the film, will team with Beguelin to write the musical's book.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore co-starred in "The Wedding Singer," which was directed by Frank Coraci. Sandler played a suburban wedding singer left at the altar by his fiancee. He then meets and falls for Julia, who happens to be engaged, and proceeds to win her heart.

Sklar and Beguelin collaborated on the musical The Rhythm Club, which played Washington D.C.'s Signature Theater. They have also worked together on Wicked City (American Stage Company) and are currently working on a musical version of the film "Get Shorty." Beguelin recently penned the book for the stage version of Disney's "Aladdin".
