Cookin' Begins Previews at Minetta Lane Feb. 20; Officially Opens March 7

Kang Il Kim, Won Hae Kim, Bum Chan Lee, Chu Ja Seo and Ho Yeoul Sul, who starred in the New Victory Theater's mounting of Cookin', will repeat their performances when the "sizzling entertainment" begins performances at the Minetta Lane Theatre in February.

The South Korean physical comedy, which played a limited engagement this fall at the New Victory, will begin performances at the Off-Broadway theatre Feb. 20, 2004, with an official opening scheduled for March 7. Conceived and directed by Seung Whan Song, Cookin' joins such other cooking-themed shows as Jonathan Reynolds' Dinner with Demons and Ed Schmidt's The Last Supper, which play, respectively, the Second Stage Theatre and a Chelsea kitchenette on West 27th Street.

Cookin' played the New Victory on West 42nd Street Sept. 25-Oct. 19, 2003. That theatre's website describes the farce thusly: "Charged with preparing an entire wedding banquet in just one hour, four chefs begin a manic menu of non-stop, high-speed action that whips up into a delicious all you-can-eat buffet of infectious rhythms. Every utensil becomes an ingredient in their recipe for heart-pounding traditional Korean samulnori drumming, spiced up with a dash of modern rock and a pinch of jazz. In their distracted frenzy, the cooks pound knives against giant wooden cutting boards, spewing shredded veggies across the stage. They joust, kung-fu style, with broomsticks. They juggle fruit, fling plates like Frisbees and mix the audience into their antics."

The creative team for Cookin' comprises Dong Woo Park (scenic design), Hee Joo Kim (costume design), Hak Young Kim (lighting design) and Jai Hyun Park (sound design).

Cookin' was created in Seoul, Korea, in 1997 where it became the longest-running show in Korea's history. At certain performances, Cookin' will be performed at the Minetta Lane by Hyung Suk Jung, Ji Won Kang, Young Hoon Kim and Sung Min Lee.

Cookin' will play Wednesday through Friday evenings at 8 PM, Saturdays at 2, 6 and 9 PM and Sundays at 2 and 7 PM. Tickets, priced $40-$65, are available by calling (212) 420-8000 or (212) 307-4100. The Minetta Lane Theatre is located at 18 Minetta Lane; the theatre's box office will open Feb. 9.
