Terry Schreiber Stages Guare's Landscape of the Body Jan. 29-Feb. 22 in NYC

By Kenneth Jones
24 Jan 2004

Landscape of the Body, by John Guare, gets a Manhattan revival at The T. Schreiber Studio Jan. 29-Feb. 22, staged by studio founder Terry Schreiber, the teacher and Broadway director.

"Set in an outrageous but deeply brutal 1970s Greenwich Village, Landscape of the Body traces the humorously surreal and tragic experiences of a naïve woman, Betty from Bangor, Maine, who comes to the City with her teenage son, Bert, intending to convince her sister to return to their quiet home in New England," according to production notes. "Instead, her sister entices Betty to remain in New York by telling tales of her own double life where by day she works in a mysterious travel agency and by night stars in porno films."

Schreiber, a teacher and director for more than 30 years, has directed on and off Broadway as well as at The Guthrie, Syracuse Stage, Studio Arena Stage and George Street Playhouse. His directorial credits range from the Tony Award-nominated K2 to Desire Under The Elms with Kathy Baker, and Feedlot with Jeff Daniels.

Landscape of the Body is designed by Hal Tiné with lighting by Joe Saint.

The cast includes Kimilee Bryant (a "Christine" of The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway), Albert Insinnia (on Broadway in Two Gentlemen of Verona, Camelot starring Richard Harris and the original company of Grease) and Joseph Rodriguez (Buffalo Hair at The Public, Richard III with Austin Pendleton at New Perspectives), with Jessica Allen, Loren Bidner, Francesco Brazzini, Pamela Crofton, Cristina Doikos, James Dunigan, Ian Campbell Dunn, Chris Lococo, Fred Tumas and Erica Wendal.

The T. Schreiber Studio is at 151 W. 26th Street, 7th Floor, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. Performances play Thursday-Sunday.
