Oscar Host Billy Crystal Pens and Performs Solo Show 700 Sundays at La Jolla, April 20-May 2

By Ernio Hernandez
27 Feb 2004

Oscar host and actor-comedian Billy Crystal will perform in a workshop production of his new stage work 700 Sundays — Billy Crystal — A Life in Progress at La Jolla Playhouse, April 20-May 2.

The work in development will appear as part of La Jolla's Page to Stage program at the Mandell Weiss Theatre.

Building upon material used in his live benefit performances of An Evening with Billy Crystal and His Special Guest David Steinberg in 2003, Crystal will continue working on 700 Sundays — which uses the actor's personal stories. La Jolla artistic director Des McAnuff is set to direct.

"Last year's benefit performances were greatly informative and this is a terrific opportunity to take the next step," said Crystal in a release.  "It's incredibly unique to have two weeks of rehearsal and then still have the opportunity to continue to rehearse and change the work as part of the Page To Stage program.  The piece you see at the beginning of the run may not be the same by the end of the two weeks!"

The solo show was previously reported to be Broadway-bound. No official word on the show's future has been announced.

Crystal, who hosts the Academy Awards for the eighth time in 2004, has appeared in "Analyze That," the sequel to "Analyze This." Other films credits include "Running Scared," "City Slickers," "Throw Momma From The Train," "The Princess Bride," "When Harry Met Sally," and "America’s Sweethearts." He also provided the voice of Mike in the animated "Monsters Inc." Crystal also received lauds for his directorial work in "61*" which he also executive produced.

The May 1 performance will serve as a Playhouse benefit. $500 Ticketbuyers will enjoy premium seats and backstage passes for an post-show reception with Crystal and McAnuff.  All benefit tickets include a pre-show cocktail reception in the theatre's lobby.

Tickets for 700 Sundays go on sale March 21 at noon. La Jolla Playhouse's box office, located on the campus of UCSD on La Jolla Village Drive (at Torrey Pines Road), can be reached by phone at (858) 550-1010 or online at www.lajollaplayhouse.com. Playhouse donors and subscribers get a jump on tickets, starting March 8.
