Period of Confinement? For Pregnant Actresses, Life Is a Cabaret in Hot Mamas, April 3 & 5 in NYC

By Kenneth Jones
18 Mar 2004

Think of it as Fertility, the Musical, or Oh, Hormones!

Three pregnant New York actresses — Alison Cimmet, Jodi Darling and Carol Linnea Johnson — will risk premature labor to sing original songs in an April cabaret show, Hot Mamas! The Mother of All Cabarets, about their experiences "with child."

"A lot of people are asking, 'Are you really all pregnant?' and the answer is yes!" actress Alison Cimmet told Playbill On-Line. "At the time of the cabaret, I'll be almost eight months, Jodi will be 7-1/2 months and Carol will be over six months."

Johnson has taken a pregnancy leave from Broadway's Mamma Mia!, where she frequently went on as Donna. Cimmet's credits include Off-Broadway's The Lady Next Door (in Yiddish) and Viola in Twelfth Night at the Prince Music Theater in Phildelphia. Darling played Laurey in a recent Oklahoma! revival with Sandy Duncan as Aunt Eller at Cherry County Playhouse in Michigan, and appeared as Magnolia in NETworks' tour of Show Boat.

Among the contributing songwriters are Bobby Lopez (Avenue Q) & Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Brian Cimmet & Amanda Yesnowitz, Georgia Stitt, Steve Marzullo & Ray Michaud, Andy Abrams & Bill Augustin, Brent Lord & Tammy Samuels, Mary-Mitchell Campbell & Leslie Becker, Sara Levine & James-Allen Ford, Gavin Creel (best known as an actor, once of Thoroughly Modern Millie), Emily Joy Schiff Glenn, Todd Almond, Peter Mills, Steven Silverstein & Lorraine Kollar and Patrick Dwyer.

Tesha Buss directs and Mary-Mitchell Campbell is musical director.

Performances are 5 PM April 3 and 8 PM April 5 at Dillons Restaurant & Cabaret, 245 W. 54th Street. For reservations (highly recommended), email HotMamasCabaret@yahoo.com or call (917) 447-6644. There is a $5 cover charge and a $10 food/drink minimum.
