In addition to the world premiere of the musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, San Diego's Old Globe has announced its new season will include Take Me Out, Vincent in Brixton, Misalliance, Fiction, I Just Stopped by to See the Man and two other new musicals, Himself and Nora and Lady Macbeth Sings the Blues.
Tony Award winner Joe Mantello will again direct the Richard Greenberg work which won him the honor as Take Me Out about the recently out star baseball player hits the stage at Old Globe. The production, presented in association with Seattle Repertory Theatre, will play Jan. 15-Feb. 20, 2005.
Himself and Nora — a new musical centering around literary legend James Joyce — makes its world premiere, March 19-April 24, 2005. Joseph Hardy directs the work, which explores the scribe's relationship with his chambermaid muse, featuring a book by Sheila Walsh and music by Jonathan Brielle and lyrics by both.
Steven Dietz's new work Fiction, which may play at Roundabout's new Off-Broadway space this summer, is slated to run at Old Globe's Cassius Carter Centre Stage, Sept. 25-Oct. 31. The play centers on two happily married writers who enjoy their honest relationship until they decide to share each other's diaries.
Amanda McBroom performs and co-wrote Lady Macbeth Sings the Blues, the new musical about a songwriter trying to get out of town to write her next great musical based on Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, but must first escape her agent, director, husband, and so on. Joel Silberman also co-penned the work set to run, Feb. 5-March 13, 2005.
I Just Stopped by to See the Man, the Stephen Jeffreys work set in the Mississippi Delta of the 1970s, is slated to run, May 21-June 26, 2005. In the play, a daughter of a legendary blues man thought to be dead and a British rocker search for the truth.
George Bernard Shaw's classic Misalliance (May 7-June 12, 2005) — the comedy set in the estate of undergarment business big shot—and Nicholas Wright's Olivier Award-winning play Vincent in Brixton (April 2-May 8, 2005)— which centers on artist Vincent van Gogh's early life in London—will also play in the coming season. Old Globe's holiday tradition Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (Nov. 21 Dec. 31) and La Pastorela (December 9-31) will also fill the stage this year.
The new plays follow the previously announced Summer Festival featuring Shakespeare stagings of Antony and Cleopatra, As You Like It, and The Two Noble Kinsmen (in repertory at the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, June 25-Sept. 26), as well as the new musical Lucky Duck (at the Old Globe Theatre, July 10 Aug. 15) and Rolin Jones' The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow (at the Cassius Carter Centre Stage, June 12-July 18).
