Belber's Match, with Langella, Liotta and Adams, Opens on Broadway April 8

The new Stephen Belber play Match, complete with twists and turns that keep audiences guessing, officially opens on Broadway April 8.
The three-person drama starring Frank Langella, Ray Liotta and Jane Adams began previews at the Plymouth Theatre March 13. Adams was the latest addition to the cast, having replaced Melora Walters during rehearsals.
Tony Award winner Langella plays a Juilliard dance teacher in Belber's Match, which concerns the impact one's choices have on others. The Araca Group produces with direction by Nicholas Martin. The creative team also includes set design by James Noone, costume design by Michael Krass, lighting design by Brian MacDevitt and sound design by Kurt Kellenberger and Jerry Yager.
According to a production statement, Match is set "on a crisp winter afternoon, [when] Mike and Lisa Davis arrive at the home of Tobi Powell to interview him about his past as a renowned choreographer. Tobi welcomes the couple with wine and witty stories of his colorful life. But as the evening unfolds, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary visit. A startling secret is uncovered and truths are revealed that will change them all forever." The playwright's other titles include Tape, A Small, Melodramatic Story, The Death of Frank and The Transparency of Val.
Langella and Adams are both Broadway veterans and Tony-winning ones (he for Seascape and Fortune's Fool and she for An Inspector Calls), BUT Match marks the Broadway debut of film actor Ray Liotta. In a recent Playbill interview, Liotta spoke about his Main Stem debut. "I'm excited," said the actor, whose last stage role was 25 years ago. "I'm nervous in a good way, just to keep the juices flowing all the time. It's a great challenge to be taking on, and I'm really looking forward to it." About the play, he added, "When I read the piece, it just grabbed me and shook me. The writing is so spectacular. You just don't see writing like this very often, in either theatre or film. . . I have to consider myself a sophisticated reader of plays and movies — and I didn't know what was coming. So, hopefully, neither will the audience."
Frank Langella made his Broadway debut in Seascape and has also appeared on Broadway in Passion, Amadeus, The Father, Hurlyburly, Present Laughter and Design for Living. Most recently on Broadway in Fortune's Fool, Langella is the recipient of two Tony Awards, for Fool and Seascape. Also a star of feature film, his movie credits boast "Dracula," "Lolita," "The Ninth Gate," "Small Soldiers," "Dave," "Diary of a Mad Housewife" and "The Twelve Chairs."
Born in Newark, N.J. in 1955, Ray Liotta's many films include "Something Wild," "Dominick and Eugene," "Field of Dreams," "Goodfellas," "Unlawful Entry," "Unforgettable," "Turbulence," "Cop Land," "Phoenix," "Hannibal," "Heartbreakers," "Blow," "John Q" and "Point of Origin."
Jane Adams first attracted attention in Paul Rudnick's I Hate Hamlet. She later won a Tony Award for An Inspector Calls. Adams' other Broadway credits include The Crucible and last season's Enchanted April.
The Plymouth Theatre is located in Manhattan at 236 West 45th Street.
