The Color Purple Musical Holds Open Casting Call in Atlanta, April 16-17

By Ernio Hernandez
08 Apr 2004

The Alliance Theatre will hold an open casting call for the world premiere musical The Color Purple in Atlanta, April 16 and 17.

Purple is looking for African-American singers, actors and dancers — both men and women — over the age of 18. The Broadway-bound production is also seeking African-American boys (ages 10-12) and girls (8-10). All must be able to sing and be available for day-time rehearsals, Tuesday-Sunday.

Vocal auditions will be held April 16 and dance auditions are set for April 17 at the Woodruff Arts Center (at 1280 Peachtree Street in Atlanta, GA). (Singer and dancers are asked to attend the vocal auditions.) Hopefuls are required to bring a picture and resume as well as leave their contact information on (404) 733-4622 to be able to see the casting director.

Sign-ins will begin at 9:30 AM on April 16 (children begin signing in at 3 PM). For the April 17 dance auditions, sign-ins start at 11:30 AM. Prepare one verse and chorus of a blues, gospel or pop song, which should have dramatic weight. Bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. Dancers should be ready to dance.

Alliance Theatre in Atlanta has nabbed the world premiere of The Color Purple, the musical adaptation of the well-known book and film, opening the company's 2004 05 season, Sept. 9-Oct. 17.

Chicago director Gary Griffin stages the Broadway-bound work featuring a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman ('Night Mother) and music from pop songwriters Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. The show will blend "dance with the sounds and rhythms of blues, gospel, jazz, swing, rural roots and African music," according to a release.

Ken Roberson (Avenue Q) choreographs and Linda Twine (Caroline, or Change) serves as musical director.

The story of "The Color Purple" centers on Celie, a teenager who endures insurmountable hardships within her own family and struggles to find her identity and love. Walker's characters convey a tale of hope, inspiration and personal triumph.

The novel was adapted for the screen in 1985 under the direction of Steven Spielberg. The movie version starred Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover.

Tickets to The Color Purple at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA will be available by subscription only. For more information, call (404) 733-4600. Visit them on the web at www.alliancetheatre.org.
