Like Oh My God!, New Satiric Musical Set in High School, Gets Reading April 18

By Robert Simonson
12 Apr 2004

"Like, Oh My God!" entered the American lexicon of slang some 20 years ago courtesy of Frank Zappa and his daughter Moon Unit and their comedic hit single "Valley Girl." Now the still-ubiquitous teen expression has given a new musical comedy its title.

Like Oh My God!, which has music and book by Marshall Pailet and book and lyrics by Al Pailet, will get an April 18 Manhattan staged reading courtesy of National Musical Theater Network in association with Makor and Blank Page Productions.

Jen Bender, an assistant director on Avenue Q, will direct a cast which includes Kate Reinders (Gypsy), Dennis Moench (Fame on 42nd Street), Amanda Ryan Paige (Zanna Don’t), Darius Nichols (Zanna Don't), Steven Rosen, Richard True, Eric Briarley and Daniel P. Vissers.

Like Oh My God!, which is currently a finalist for the NMTN/TAM New Voices Award and was presented at Stephen Schwartz's ASCAP 2003 Musical Theatre Workshop, follows "a misfit, artsy high-school student who turns his upscale, oppressive neighborhood upside down when he mixes his passion for music with his biology project and recruits the 'jock boys' and the sexy, but unobtainable ingénue of his dreams—Zschoenczyhoh (pronounced 'Skanky Ho') to be in his science project, Sperm! The Musical.  A fallen angel who quashes creativity is sent to try to stop him.

The reading will be held at the Makor/Steinhardt Center, 35 W. 67th Street (between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue). Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance by contacting Makor (212) 601-1000 or online at www.makor.org.
